In Praise Of Aunt Esther

Growing up
Aunt Esther was my role model
Friendly, self-assured, selfless
Beautiful dark brown eyes
Smooth coffee-colored skin
With a model's figure
And designer wardrobe to die for

Summers she took me to
Radio City, Roxy Theatre
Broadway musicals
She bought me clothes, a nurse's watch
And a pair of solid gold earrings

Very capable, widely esteemed
She rose to Head Nurse
And was honored by Congress as
"Massachusetts Nurse of the Year"
Now retired, she travels
Enjoys her grandchildren
Is active in church, NAACP, Urban League
And is one of my best friends
