Today I bought flowers
to give my spirits a lift
Those bright carnations
screamed out to me
to take them home

Today I bought flowers
to put in a vase
near a photo montage
of my departed mother
In a way,

the flowers are a memorial
to her and the victims
of the September 11 massacre,
but also give me peace and solace

I rarely buy flowers for myself--
that's left to my husband and son--
but today I bought flowers,
flowers, flowers
like it was the beginning
of the end of the world
